Structural and ecological characteristics of populations of Pseudocedrela kotschyi from the forest of Pe-nessoulou (Benin)

The present study was conducted in Penessoulou classified forest (North-West, Benin) and characterized the structures and studied Pseudocedrela kotschyi (Schweinf.) Harms populations’ ecology in order to establish better management strategies for the species in this forest. To achieve this, twenty-three (23) plots of 50 m x 50 m were randomly installed across the different plant formations (gallery forest, savannah, dense forest). In these devices, the circumference at 1.3 m from the ground and the height of all trees with dbh ≥ 10 cm were measured and the trees with dbh < 10 cm were counted. The mode of distribution of individuals of the species was determined by calculating the Blackman (IB) and Green (GI) indices. The study reveals a specific richness of 44 species and a better distribution (H = 3.78 bits, Eq = 0.87) of species within the gallery forest. Pseudocedrela kotschyi, is only found in the savannah (4 trees/ha) and in the gallery forest (104 trees/ha). The values of the quadratic mean diameter, the mean height of Lorey, the basal area of the trees of the species in the gallery forest are respectively: Dg = 21.04 cm, HL = 19.24 m and G = 3.61 m²/ha with a left asymmetry for the structure in diameter. With regard to regeneration, the juvenile individuals of the species (dbh between 1 cm and 5 cm) are found exclusively in the gallery forest (density = 125 juvenile individuals/ha) while the savannahs are richer in seedlings (dbh ˂ 1 cm) of the species (density = 1580 seedlings/ha). Young poles (dbh between 5 cm and 10 cm) are non-existent in the plant formations studied. Faced with all these findings, conservation strategies have been proposed.
